Kate Chopin’s “A Pair of Silk Stockings” was published in Vogue, considered to be one of the most progressive publications in 1897 and tells the story of a once well-to-do woman who obtains a financial windfall and has to determine the best way to spend it.

Chopin was one of the earliest feminist American authors. She lived her adult life in Louisiana and most of her stories take place there. “A Pair of Silk Stockings” preceded her most famous work, “The Awakening” which was met with controversy and censorship over the books candid depictions of female sexual desire.
