Episode Notes

Humans are rarely content with their lot in life. We long for something more and, all too often believe that, given the right opportunity, our lives can be made better in an instant through some fortunate event, like winning a lottery.

There is a reason for the adage, “be careful what you wish for,” because sometimes getting what we want comes with unintended consequences.

That’s the moral behind one of the most chilling classic short stories, and the climax of our scary stories for Halloween, the Monkey’s Paw by W.W. Jacobs.

The Monkey’s Paw was a massive hit after it’s 1902 publication. In 1903 it was turned into a play. In 1915, an early film was based on the story. Over the next century, there were many more films, along with radio and television adaptations created.
